The Shining Film Opening Analysis

The medium paced organ music represents that of a horror movie; the style of music used usually appears in the horror genre, hence the horror aspect of this drama/horror film. During the opening two minutes the music changes to what sounds like screaming, furthering the conventions of sound for a horror film, it then goes back to the original music as it reaches two minutes. The simple blue text that appears for the opening credits scrolls upwards, the colour of the text, blue, represents water, this appears to be the setting next to a road. A fast paced track of the lake featured represents speed, and adrenaline, foreshadowing that something may happen during the film that requires speed. It cuts to an ariel view of a yellow car driving along the road, then the fast paced track continues along the road then eventually slows down to a normal speed, this simulates that a crash or something similar may possibly happen not long after the two minutes ends. The yellow car is driving in an area where no one else appears to be, this furthers the aspect of horror as the conventions of this genre are most commonly neglected areas or buildings. The producers may have possibly chosen the colour yellow so the car is visible to the viewer as the colour yellow usually stands out above other colours. The credits appear to go on for longer than two minutes, this is something I do not like about this film opening as I feel that two minutes is enough for opening credits as you also have credits after the film has ended. I chose to write an analysis on this particular film opening as it is within the same genre as I intend to use for my film opening, drama/horror.
